Understanding Birth Mothers Through a Gospel Lens

Let’s start with reverence.
Birth mothers are not side characters in your story.
They are central.
And understanding them isn’t just an act of empathy, it’s an act of discipleship.
These are women making the most excruciating, selfless decision imaginable. Many are already mothers. Many are doing this in isolation. Some will never speak openly about their decision again. But Heaven sees them.
And so must we.
The plan of salvation teaches us that our stories began long before this life. So, it’s not unreasonable to believe that your child and their birth mother knew each other before this moment, maybe even loved each other. What’s happening here is not random. It’s sacred. It’s woven.

This is an invitation to open your heart to her story. To drop assumptions. To listen with spiritual ears. And to hold space for both grief and grace in equal measure.
Because sealed families begin in sacrifice. And love—eternal love—can hold all of it.
Reflection Prompt
What do you assume or believe about birth mothers today?
What makes you uncomfortable—and why?
How might the Savior look at her? How might your child?
Optional Devotional Thought
“The worth of souls is great in the sight of God.” – D&C 18:10
